Adventure at  Bodiam Castle, East Sussex

Hear spooky tales at Arundel Ghost Experience, and take a tour of the old prison cells, reputedly haunted. Children love storybook Bodiam Castle, a 14th century stronghold complete with towers, battlements and moat, and a ride on the beautifully restored steam trains of theBluebell Railway is always popular. The award-winning Weald and Downland Open Air Museum has over 45 historic buildings, all rescued from destruction and rebuilt in a parkland setting with woodland walks, working Shire horses, and a 17th century mill.

There’s a soft play area for tots, a huge play frame for older kids and pool tables and a jukebox for Fun for all at Harbour Park, Littlehampton, West Sussexteens at the Flying Fortress Ford Airfield - and comfy sofas for parents. Harbour Park,  Littlehampton, has funfair rides, a synthetic ice-skating rink, and a 9-hole adventure golf course.

Be prepared to get lost at the Amazing Maize Maze at Tulleys Farm near Crawley (summer holidays only). With a path network of over three miles over an area of five acres, it’s one of the largest and most intricate puzzles in the world.

Excitement at Drusillas, Alfriston, East SussexAnimals are always a hit with children, so visit the meerkats, lemurs and wallabies at Drusilla’s Park in Alfriston; llamas, alpacas and cheeky angora goats at the Ashdown Forest Llama Park and friendly farm animals on the working farm at the Seven Sisters Sheep Centre, East Dean.

If your children are fascinated by how things work, take them to the Observatory Science Centre, Herstmonceux, where they can make clouds, see satellite pictures of Britain and try to predict the weather. Fasten your seatbelts for a tour of the planets at The South Downs Planetarium in Chichester.
