From the coast to the countryside, seaside resorts to historic towns and picture-perfect villages, Sussex is chock-full of things to do and see.
On the coast, sample the enduring charms of the classic English seaside, hunt out secluded bays and unspoilt sand dunes, and visit lively ports and marinas.
Get out and about in the countryside, walking on the South Downs, through bluebell woods and ancient royal forests, or be inspired by exotic plantings and old-fashioned roses in the glorious gardens of the Sussex Weald. Look out for birds and other wildlife in the nature reserves and country parks dotting the county.
Visit places where history was made: the site of the Battle of Hastings, fairytale, and Newhaven Fort. Historic houses include magnificent mansions and arts & crafts showpieces, Elizabethan manors and Modernist icons, and the homes of famous writers including Rudyard Kipling and Virginia Woolf.
And if a spot of retail therapy is needed, Sussex offers everything from top department stores and all your favourite chains to the quirky, unusual and one-off shops that make shopping such a pleasure here.
Sussex has long been a magnet for artists of all kinds, and the arts play a major role in life here, with dozens of small galleries and artist’s studios all over the county. Top notch galleries include Pallant House, which showcases the best collection of 20th century art outside the capital, while Eastbourne’s Towner Art Gallery re-opens in Spring 2008 in a purpose-built £8.5m modern building and the magnificent De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhil, East Sussex.
