Arundel, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, South Downs, Sussex by the Sea is hard to beat. The beautiful Sussex beaches, from award-winning, family- friendly resorts to secluded sand dunes, so close to the unspoilt landscapes of the South Downs, a laid-back pace of life and buckets of charm give this area a timeless appeal.
First choice for families are the resorts of Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, both with award-winning beaches and everything you could need for a fun, safe day at the sea. Both have fun-packed amusement parks right on the sea-front. To get away from it all, head for the quieter beaches at Felpham and Middleton-on-Sea, Ferring or Climping, where sand and pebbles are backed by grassy dunes and open countryside. For sailors and windsurfers, this stretch of coast offers great conditions all year round.
Inland, picturesque Arundel, with its grand castle, cathedral and antique shops, is a must-see, and from the town quay you can take a leisurely boat trip up and down the River Arun to pretty Amberley and Littlehampton. Explore traffic-free trails in the beautiful Arun Valley and on the rolling South Downs, perfect for walking, horse riding and cycling. Passing through Sussex by the sea is the famous South Downs Way, a national trail winding through scenic countryside, past historic sites like the Iron Age hill fort of Chanctonbury Ring and Elizabethan Parham House, as well as pretty villages like Cocking, Houghton and Bury, and quaint country pubs.
Take your binoculars for a wildlife safari at the area’s nature reserves, important refuges for wild migrant birds in the winter. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre at Arundel, the wet meadows of the RSPB nature reserve at Pulborough Brooks and the Pagham Harbour reserve are home to thousands of ducks, geese, swans and wading birds.
