A venture into the unknown or a well worn path – starts with a first step
1066 Country has some of the county’s finest coast and countryside, together with historic sites including the field on which the Battle of Hastings was fought.
The countryside is perfect for both intrepid ramblers and casual walkers with much to discover, including the moated wonders of Herstmonceux Castle and Bodiam Castle to Rudyard Kipling’s former home Batemans and the exquisite Great Dixter gardens. Bohemian Hastings, the setting for the popular TV series Foyle’s War, is home to Europe’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet and their distinctive black net huts, and it has a world class Marine Stewardship Council-certified fishery that’s celebrated every year in the town’s Seafood and Wine Festival.
Along the coast in Bexhill is the recently restored Modernist style De La Warr Pavilion. Rye and Camber also offer art galleries and the home of Henry James together with rare sand dunes, a spectacular nature reserve and a fascinating museum. Pevensey has a castle, once a Roman Fort, and a unique courthouse museum.
Throughout 1066 Country there is a year-round events programme with the Jack-in-the-Green Festival of Morris Dancing and the Hastings Half Marathon in spring and a host of festivals and celebrations throughout the autumn and winter.
Further information can be found at the official 1066 Country website.
